Reiki

Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) is an ancient form of healing originating from Japan, although Reiki as we know it was founded in the 1800’s by Dr Mikao Usui and has been adapted since by various teachers of varying traditions.

‘Rei’ means ‘Universal wisdom’ and ‘Ki’ means Life energy’. Reiki therefore can be translated as ‘vital life energy guided by universal wisdom’.

It uses a technique commonly called palm healing or hands on healing as a form of complementary therapy. Through the use of this technique, practitioners believe that they are transferring universal energy (i.e., reiki) in the form of ki through the palms, which allows for self-healing and a state of equilibrium.

There are two main branches of Reiki, commonly referred to as Traditional Japanese Reiki and Western Reiki. Though differences can be wide and varied between both branches and traditions, the primary difference is that Westernised forms use systematised hand-placements rather than relying on an intuitive sense of hand- positions, which is commonly used by Japanese Reiki branches.

It is completely natural, safe, holistic and extremely relaxing.

A full Reiki treatment lasts approximately an hour. The recipient lies down, fully clothed. The practitioner then channels the Reiki energy through to the recipient’s body by placing her hands in different positions on or just above the body.

You might feel heat where the practitioner places her hands. This is a sign that there is an energy blockage in that part of the body, and so the practitioner’s hands would remain there until the heat dissipates.

Reiki activates the body’s own self-healing mechanisms and helps rebalance and detoxify the body.

It may prove effective for both physical conditions and mental and emotional issues and is particularly suitable for conditions requiring a gentle approach. It may be able to help with: moodiness, anxiety, panic attacks, pain relief, stress-related issues, lack of energy, headaches and many more.
