Breathe Your Way to Good Health
Most of us take breathing for granted but breathing correctly is vital for optimum health. But how do we do we breathe better?
When you yawn or give out a sigh then your body probably needs more oxygen. As the lower part of your lungs are more efficient than the upper part of sending oxygen round your body it is important to clean the air from your lungs completely to supply your body with the most oxygen available. When our oxygen supply is lower than it should be we are susceptible to anxiety, fatigue, pain, illness and have a reduced brain function. When we breathe correctly we relax our mind and body and regenerate our cells helping protect against illness and disease. Breathing helps produce endorphins and is a widely practiced form of pain relief.
So how exactly should we be breathing? If you put one hand on your chest and the other on your belly take a normal breath in you will possibly notice that your chest expands more than your belly. If this is the case then you are not making very good use of your diaphragm and not getting your lungs full of oxygen. When you inhale, feel that you are breathing from your abdomen feeling as though your stomach is inflating and when you exhale try to expel as much air as possible.
There are many breathing exercises which you can do to help you breathe more efficiently, here is one of them. Lie down on your back in a relaxed position. Close your eyes and take slow deep breaths making sure you fill your lungs as much as possible and exhale fully. When you breathe in feel yourself relaxing and imagine the oxygen rushing all the way round your body reaching all the way into your fingers and toes. If you have a pain somewhere focus on the area where the pain is, feel as though you are breathing into the pain and the breathe the pain away as you exhale. Do this exercise for 5 to 10 minutes every day.
