Preventing and Understanding Eating Disorders

Are you or someone close to you suffering with an eating disorder?

24th February – 2nd March is Eating disorder awareness week, this aims to raise awareness and understanding of eating disorders.  With over 1.6 million people suffering with an eating disorder figures are thought to be much higher as this is just those who have sought help.   

Of the 1.6 million 10% suffer with anorexia, 40% are bulimic and 50 % ENOS (binge eating). The amount of men affected with eating disorders lies somewhere between 10 and 25% 

This year marks the 25th anniversary of B-eat and to mark the anniversary they have created a manifesto to help people with eating disorders aiming to improve the following:

• End the stigma that surrounds eating disorders
• Compassionate understanding
• Prevention
• Prompt diagnosos
• Timely, effective treatment

Beat’s vision is to put an end to preventable deaths from eating disorders as they believe that recovery is always possible. Anorexia has the highest death rate of any psychiatric disorder an d 20 % of sufferers will die prematurely from their illness. 

If you or someone you know may have an eating disorder it is important to remember that the earlier you seek help the easier it can be to treat.
