10 Tips to Encourage your Children to Exercise More

Over 50% of all children in UK don’t get sufficient exercise and with obesity on the rise should we do more to encourage our kids to be more active?

TVs, computers and games consoles play a major role in many family households these days so it is often difficult to persuade your children to exercise when they feel they have everything they need on the sofa or in their rooms. Along with a healthy balanced diet, regular exercise can not only help prevent obesity but can be great for the physical and mental wellbeing of your children. Teaching them how to enjoy exercise at a young age is not just important for the now but can help condition them to be healthy and active throughout adulthood. The government recommends that children get a minimum of one hour exercise a day.

If you feel your kids could be more active but don’t know how to go about it then you may want to try some of the following:

  1. Find and exercise or sport that suits the individual child, something they enjoy and could excel at and is right for their age group and fitness level.
  2. Join in with them, children learn by example
  3. Be encouraging and positive when they are doing it
  4. Invite their friends to join in too if it is appropriate
  5. Give them a routine with their exercise, i.e swimming every Wednesday afternoon, football every Saturday, a family walk every Sunday etc.
  6. Keep the exercise fun and engaging for them
  7. Make sure they feel and are safe whatever they are doing
  8. Get them equipment or toys to use whilst doing their exercising
  9. Don’t overdo it.  They will get fed up if you try to push them too hard
  10. Restrict TV time and maybe use it as a reward after exercise
